The mission of Pixan Ixim is to implement initiatives that strengthen community leadership in Arts and Culture, Interfaith Dialogue, Pastoral Care, Education and Indigenous Peoples Human Rights in Omaha, Nebraska as well as Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
My journey began in May of 2015 when I partnered with Pixan Ixim of Omaha, NE and accepted an incredible service opportunity in Guatemala. I spent five weeks in rural Mayan communities providing medical assistance, promoting healthcare, and learning about Mayan culture and traditions.
I was heartbroken to learn of the unimaginable hardship and suffering the Mayan culture has endured for decades. However, despite the extreme poverty and inadequate medical conditions, the Mayans welcomed a group of strangers into their homes, communities, and hearts without any hesitation. I feel truly humbled and blessed to be able to know such an amazing group of people. While I was able to make a small impact, I felt there was more that could be done and what I thought would be a short term service trip, turned out to be a life-changing experience.
Upon returning, I joined the Board of Directors for Pixan Ixim and founded Maya Medical Project with the hopes of improving health care and education for the Mayan population living in extreme poverty in Guatemala. With your help, we will be one step closer to changing the lives of those who need our help the most. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support in Maya Medical Project.
